In the service department, we frequently get calls where phones are “just not working” or “suddenly went dead.” The first thing you should do if this occurs on your phone is to check all of your phone’s connections. While it is possible that the phone has participated in its last conversation, sometimes the handset cord or base cord has become loose and displays go blank or callers are unable to hear you. By simply checking these connections, you can often “fix” it.
While it can be really frustrating when your phone does not ring, goes straight to voicemail and you are missing calls there is one quick and easy troubleshooting step you can try to alleviate the problem. If your phone has a “Do Not Disturb/Hold” button, be sure it is turned off. If your phone is set to “Do Not Disturb,” it will not ring and callers will immediately be directed into your voicemail box.
Another easy fix to a common problem comes from the MIC OFF button. Some phones have a feature for callers to page their office. Sometimes the phones have a button labeled MIC OFF. While this button is great if you are in a meeting and do not want interoffice pages interrupting you, it can be a headache if you don’t realize it is on. When this button is turned on (the light is on), you will not be able to make any pages without using the handset and you will not hear pages through your phone.
These are just a few simple troubleshooting steps that can save you a lot of time, money and frustration when seemingly large problems are really simple little things.
